My Inca Gold, Street Cruiser Series 1, 2002

The Street Cruiser Series 1

(Dream Cruiser Series 1)

History:

Introduced just in time for the Motor City's celebrated Woodward Dream Cruise, the 2002 Chrysler PT Dream Cruiser Series 1 is a limited-edition model that was available in Chrysler dealerships by February of 2002. This edition is the first in a series of factory-customized Dream Cruisers to be introduced on an annual basis.

Chrysler began production on January 7, 2002 and built only 7,500 units in North America, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $23,245 for the manual transaxle version and $24,070 for the automatic transaxle version (prices include $565 for destination).

The 2002 Chrysler PT Dream Cruiser is painted Inca Gold, an evolution of the color first shown on the Chrysler Pronto Cruizer concept car revealed at the 1998 Salon de l'Automobile in Geneva, Switzerland. This color, exclusive to this series of PT Cruisers, is a chrome-yellow gold with a metallic sparkle. In addition to Inca Gold paint, the vehicle features a "Dream Cruiser, Series 1" chrome badge on the liftgate. The car also sports 16-inch MOPAR chrome wheels with customized gold center caps and bright PT Cruiser graphics.

"Visually, the Inca Gold monochromatic appearance unifies the Chrysler PT Cruiser's dramatic form," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President of Design, Chrysler Group. "With its unique color-keyed grille, bumpers and body-side moldings, the vehicle takes on more of a customized look."

Inside, a special plaque is integrated into the instrument panel that reads, "Dream Cruiser, Series 1." The plaque also marks the number of the vehicle, 1 - 7,500, to indicate the sequence in which it was built as part of the limited edition Dream Cruiser production run. In addition, "Dream Cruiser" will be embroidered into the floor mats with matching Inca Gold thread.

The same matching colored accents appear throughout the interior - - - on the instrument panel, including the passenger-side air bag door and instrument cluster bezel. Door bolsters are a matching gold grain vinyl. Seats are Dark Taupe and Light Pearl Beige with Inca Gold half-moon leather inserts. A unique textured leather, called Matrix leather, is used in the seat cushion, seat back inserts, steering wheel, and shift knob on automatic transmissions.

The Street Cruiser Series 1 debuted in March 2002 at the Geneva Motor Show. The special edition, available in Europe in Spring 2002, comes with the 2.0 liter

engine and either a manual or automatic, and is largely identical to the PT Cruiser Limited.

The Street Cruiser Series 1 (available in North America as the "Dream Cruiser Series 1") is painted in Inca Gold, an exclusive chrome-yellow gold with a metallic sparkle.

In addition to Inca Gold paint, the vehicle will feature a "Street Cruiser Series 1" shield-shaped liftgate badge in Inca Gold with a chrome outer edge and chrome lettering. The car also sports 16-inch chrome wheels with customised centre caps in Inca Gold with bright "PT Cruiser" graphics. It has a colour-keyed grille, bumpers, and body-side mouldings.

Matching Inca Gold coloured accents appear throughout the interior - on the instrument panel, including the passenger-side air bag door, and instrument cluster bezel. Door bolsters are a matching gold grain vinyl.

Seats are light pearl beige leather with gold leather inserts. "Axis" perforated leather is used on the seat cushion and seat back inserts, while a unique textured leather, called Matrix leather, is used on the steering wheel and shift knob on automatic transmission models.

With the debut of the Street Cruiser Series 1 today at the Geneva Motor Show, Chrysler PT Cruiser now offers a range of four different models in Europe: 1.6 petrol, 2.2 CRD, and 2.0 petrol in both PT Cruiser and Street Cruiser.

Tech Tips:

Chrysler PT Cruiser (and other 2000+ vehicles) Computer Codes

Getting the codes

All Chrysler vehicles with fuel injection have had some form of "error checking." In many older vehicles, a person could easily turn the key back and forth a few times to get a two-digit code. With the PT Cruiser, a longer code seems to be used. In addition, as with all vehicles sold in the United States, the system is OBDC3 compatible, so that a standard diagnostic device can be plugged into a standard jack to get computer codes.

When some problems are found, the computer lights up the "engine light;" others are ignored until a mechanic asks for them. The "engine light" stays on when a serious emissions or engine problem is found, until the code is erased.

Chrysler vehicles have a "limp in" mode which reverts to a pre-programmed "guessing map" for timing, fuel delivery, etc. when a critical sensor fails. Those who have been in other cars when their oxygen sensor failed can feel grateful for this feature, though it can be confusing - for example, in some (maybe all) models, the automatic transmission is limited to second gear! The engine light also turns itself on for two seconds every time the car is started so you will know the bulb still works.

The "engine light" may shut itself off if there are no problems for three consecutive trips, or three consecutives engine misfire or fuel system tests with no problems.

To get the codes, put the key into the ignition, push down the odometer reset button, then turn the key to RUN with your finger on the button - and then release the button. The odometer will go through 1111111 through 999999, then display the car's serial number, then show the error codes starting with P. I'm not sure what the other displays mean. Note that this method may not work with 2003 or later vehicles.

Here's the old method which may work if the first one doesn't: move the key from Run to Off to Run to Off to Run within five seconds. It does not always work the first time. (Run is JUST before Start). The code will show up in the odometer - thank your lucky stars for this, since the codes used to get blinked on the engine light. This could be frustrating since they sometimes seemed to pause in the wrong place...

You can also get the codes using an OBDC III scan tool. That's the best way to do it, but not everyone wants to spend the cash on these tools.

We have an additional code list in PDF format - the content is a little different, and there seem to be more codes! Click here to get it.
